Very Low Calorie Phase (VLCD) allows 500 calories for each person. Low Calorie Phase (LCP) is individualized, using one’s BMR to calculate allowed calories. All calories are derived from lean protein sources.
VLCD includes carbs, like melba toast, and some fruits. LCP emphasis is lean proteins with limited carbs and NO fruit.
VLCD doesn’t allow food for breakfast, only coffee or tea. LCP recommends the dieter eat a high protein, low calorie breakfast within 30 minutes of waking up. (15-20 grams)
VLCD restricts proteins to only chicken, white fish, lean beef. Proteins are ranked by protein, fat, and carb content. The higher on the recommended list the better, allowing for larger portions and more options.
VLCD is strict about eating only certain vegetables and not mixing them. LCP allows unlimited vegetables, mixed if desired, as long as total carbs for the day remains under 30 grams.
VLCD does not allow dieter to use certain skin products, shampoos, and cosmetics. LCP has no restrictions on any of these types of products.
Dieter weighs him/herself daily. Dieter weight him/herself weekly.
Exercise is not allowed. Dieter should continue the same amount of exercise as they were doing prior to starting. Also consider 20-30 minute of walking before breakfast.
Limited choices for food and drink on the VLCD.

New food and drink items (like protein shakes or zero-calorie drinks) give the dieter more options to keep them motivated and accommodate a busier lifestyle. Any zero calorie/zero carb drinks are allowed.

  3. If hCG works so well for weight loss, why don’t pregnant women lose weight? hCG works to mobilize fat for use by the body ONLY when there is a significant decrease in calories and fat. For weight loss, a very low calorie diet of the proper foods is used to help the hCG to rid the body of abnormal fat stores.
  4. Will my metabolism slow down if I am on a very low calorie diet? It is true that normally when cutting back on calories and fat, our body stores fat and our metabolism slows. This happens because fat is a life-saving source of stored energy. When a very low calorie diet is used with the hCG, the hormone signals the body to used stored fat for energy, and will eliminate excess fat reserves.
